When it rains in Mallacoota it buckets down and that is exactly what the anglers fishing the Yamaha East Gippsland Bream Classic on the 28th & 29th of April were confronted with, cold hard unrelenting rain on day 1 of the competition. Although the rain was making things extremely uncomfortable for anglers it did however turn the bream on the chew and by 11am on the Saturday the word coming in from the water was that numerous teams had already had their 5 bream and were continually upgrading.

Day 1

With the rain still coming down at 2pm the anglers started the weigh in process with some impressive bags brought to the scales. Barry Thomas and Graham Taylor from Team Hooked On Bream set a cracking pace weighing in 5 bream for 5.04kg and setting the Eco-Gear Big Bream mark at 1.34kg. As bag after bag of 5 bream were weighed in around the 4 to 4.5kg mark it looked as though the Berkley Round 1 prize was locked away. Then up walked Jarrod Healey and Dean Granger from Team Gulp with a bag of bream that could have been mistaken for eight or nine bream not five. As the bag hit the scales a new Vic Bream Classics record for the heaviest one day bag was set at 6.20kg and therefore pushing the Gulp boys into the lead by more than 1kg on 2nd place and scoring the 2 $500 Berkley Round 1 prize packs for their efforts. Having not finished there Jarrod then proceeded to pull a bream out of his bag that had the crowd in ore and when weighed smashed the Eco-Gear big bream mark and also set a new Vic Bream Classics Big Bream record at 1.8kg. All in all it was a very productive day for Team Gulp, but with so many teams weighing in healthy bags on the Saturday it was still anyone's tournament to win.

Day 2

Anglers awoke on Sunday to no rain but heavy fog which made navigating the large Mallacoota Inlet extremely difficult. All eyes were fixed firmly on Team Gulp and their secret spot from Saturday, but the fog provided a perfect cover for the guys to slip away to their prime spot some what undetected. Heading straight to the area called Fairhaven on the inlet Jarrod and Dean proceeded to execute the same strategy as Saturday. Using a combination of G-Loomis DSR8200 and G-Loomis SJ720 rods matched to Daiwa 2000 sized Airity and Certate reels rigged with 4lb Berkley Crystal Fireline and 4lb Siglon Flurocarbon leaders, Team Gulp worked the edges flicking Berkley Gulp 6inch  Camo Worms on TT 1/60th HWS jigheads and Eco-Gear SX40 Hardbody lures in colours 308 & 339. After catching 3 fish early on day 2 the bite started to slow down and the guys had to look for a new approach to put together their bag. "We focused mainly on the shoreline areas that had a mixture of sand, weed and rocky patches. This worked well early on, but as the fog started to lift and the day become much brighter the fish seemed to move off the bank into deeper water. I managed to use my Humminbird colour sounder to great effect as the high definition screen enabled us to easily identify schools of bream off the bottom in deeper water" Jarrod said. Once detected Jarrod and Dean dropped down some 3 inch Berkley Gulp Fry on a 1/22nd TT jig head which had immediate success and helped them put together their 5 bream for day 2.

Other than the bright sunshine and bigger crowd in attendance the weights coming in on the Sunday were extremely similar to that of the previous day with numerous bags of bream weighed in over the 4kg mark. With Team Gulp feeling they only had a modest bag of bream they were starting to get a little nervous and when Team Fish -A-Fare's Shane Barling and Trent Stephenson took out the Berkley Round 2 Prize with a cracking 5.76kg bag the boys thought a come from behind victory was imminent. When Team Gulp's bag pulled the scales down to 4.08kg giving them a total 10/10 bream bag of 10.28kg and for the second year in a row smashing the magical 10kg mark, they knew the Yamaha East Gippsland Bream Classic crown was theirs. Team Gulp also secured the Eco-Gear Big Bream Prize for their 1.8kg monster from Saturday making it a very productive weekend indeed for the Gulp boys.
